John 5 shows Jesus’ power and authority in a big way. He heals a man who had been paralyzed for 38 years, telling him, “Get up, pick up your mat, and walk!” But since it’s the Sabbath, the religious leaders get upset, accusing Jesus of breaking the rules. Jesus boldly explains that He’s doing His Father’s work and reveals an even bigger truth: He has the authority to give life and judge the world because He is the Son of God. He tells them, “Whoever hears My word and believes Him who sent Me has eternal life.” Jesus also points out that the Scriptures, which the leaders study so carefully, all point to Him, but they refuse to come to Him for life. The chapter reminds us that Jesus brings healing, life, and hope, and that believing in Him is the way to eternal life.
