Chapter Thirteen
John 13 is a chapter full of love and humility. It begins with Jesus knowing His time has come to leave the world and return to the Father. At the Passover meal, Jesus surprises His disciples by washing their feet, something only a servant would do. When Peter protests, Jesus explains that unless He washes their feet, they have no part with Him. Afterward, He tells them that He’s setting an example for them to serve others humbly. Then, during the meal, Jesus reveals that one of His disciples will betray Him. He identifies Judas as the one who will betray Him, and after Judas leaves, Jesus tells the remaining disciples that He will be glorified through His death. He gives them a new commandment: “Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.” The chapter ends with Peter boldly declaring that he will lay down his life for Jesus, but Jesus predicts that Peter will deny Him three times before the rooster crows. John 13 emphasizes love, humility, and the importance of serving others, setting the stage for Jesus’ sacrificial journey.
